Refractive Laser Surgery – RLS

The term laser surgery has become a buzzword in recent times and has most certainly elicited interest within both the contact lens and spectacle lens wearing populations globally.

Firstly it is important to understand what the term RLS (refractive laser surgery) means. Refractive surgery refers to surgical procedures that will correct or alter the refraction of the eye.  That means that a person who is farsighted or nearsighted can have a surgical procedure done to alter the shape of their eye in such a way that the light is focused properly on the back of the eye to allow normal clear vision.  Refractive Laser surgery therefore describes the surgical procedure through which the shape change of the eye is brought about by means of a laser.
